Zoom at VIU

Zoom provides web-based video and audio conferencing for real-time communication between instructors and students. VIU employees can create an online meeting room from within the Zoom app, or online at viu.zoom.us and schedule meetings between the whole class or individual groups.

Students

Students do not need a Zoom account to join a meeting. To experience the full features of a Zoom meeting, we recommend that everyone  download the Zoom app. Zoom is a free app on Mac, PC, iOS, and Android. Participants using an older version of Zoom may be required to update their app before joining a meeting.

When joining a Zoom meeting as a participant the display name enter will be stored as part of the meeting record on Zoom's Canadian servers. Students may wish to use just their first name or a pseudonym (agreed upon with the meeting host prior to the meeting) when joining to limit the personal information gathered by Zoom.

Employees

All VIU instructional employees can set up a Zoom account by contacting the Centre for Innovation and Excellence in Learning (CIEL) at learnsupport@viu.ca. Instructional employees will be granted licensed accounts for the remainder of the 2023-2024 academic year.

Non-instructional faculty are not eligible for new licensed Zoom accounts. If your role at VIU does not involve instruction, please use Teams for video conferencing moving forward. You can find support resources to help you get started in the IT Knowledge Base

If you have an existing VIU Zoom account, you use Sign in with SSO and enter "viu" as your domain to log in to Zoom with your VIU account.
